ODNR DIVISION OF WILDLIFE ANNOUNCES PROPOSALS FOR NEW, CONSERVATIVE HARVEST LIMITS FOR LAKE ERIE WALLEYE

?PORT CLINTON, OH -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife today announced that Ohio is proposing new conservative walleye limits for Lake Erie sports anglers. The new limits are part of cooperative strategy by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission's Lake Erie Committee to strengthen the lake's walleye population. The Lake Erie Committee is composed of representatives from the five fisheries agencies on Lake Erie - Michigan Department of Natural Resources, New York Department of Environmental Conservation, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, and Pennsylvania Boat and Fish Commission.

?"As a member of the Lake Erie Committee, Ohio will implement more cautious walleye harvest strategies as part of a multi-agency plan to strengthen Lake Erie's declining walleye levels," said ODNR Division of Wildlife Chief Michael Budzik. "Although fishing for smallmouth bass and yellow perch has been good, we need to do our part to improve walleye fishing -- which made our lake so popular in the 1980s and 90s."

?Budzik said that the Division of Wildlife will propose several regulations to the Ohio Wildlife Council at its meeting next week in order to address Lake Erie walleye population concerns. Recommendations for the 2001 fishing season include a daily bag limit of four walleye per angler from March 1 though April 30, and a bag limit of six walleye from May 1 through February 28. Presently, the daily bag limit is 10 walleye per angler.
