One step forward, two steps back.......... What an incredible change in weather here at the western basin of Lake Erie, and all of the north eastern United States for that matter. Last Monday and Tuesday we had temps in the 70's and low 80's. By Wednesday evening we had lost 50 degrees, and the gale winds and snow had set in. Now as I write this short report, the temps are still in the 20's with the snow and wind still flying!

Unbelievable is the only way to describe it. I've been chartering for over 20 years, and fishing the big lake for another 10 years or so before that; I do not remember an April starting out like this. No real big changes are in site either for the next few days. Hopefully by this coming weekend we will start to climb out of this weather pattern. I am already concerned for this springs' Walleye spawn. The big females were just starting to lay their eggs when this burst of winter like weather set in. We can only hope for the best.

I did manage to get out a couple days before the big change set in. Although I did not have a charter on, me and a buddy of mine managed to limit out with the same sized eaters that we had caught last weekend when I had a trip on. It was kind of nice to fish for myself for a change. Having fresh fish for dinner was a real treat! I even managed to catch a big old Catfish jigging!

After the winds set in along with the snow, all we've been able to do is baby sit the boats, adjusting the lines as the water depths fluctuate with the gale winds. We've also kept heat down in the bilges to keep the engines from freezing up with the cold night time temps that have dropped as low as 20 degrees. Watching the snow on the new Raymarine Sirius Weather System that I installed last spring has been interesting to say the least. Water temps here at the western basin have dropped back down to the upper 30's. We are all just going to have to wait this one out.
