Western Erie County / WCO John Bowser & DWCO Randy Leighton Steelhead:
Steelhead have been moving closer to shore as evident by the number of fish caught from the wall at Walnut and at the mouths of Trout and Godfrey runs. A "few" Steelhead have moved into the tribs (no big numbers yet) and have worked their way up to the Walnut Project waters. The Project waters clean out is complete and the holes look great. Even with the low water conditions the pools look deep and green. Needed rainfall and a week of cold nights should help make the Project waters a prime area. Long term forecasts for the next week indicate the possibility of rain and cooler temperatures. Walleye:
Walleye have begun to scatter with limited numbers of fish being brought in. Charter captains familiar with the walleye patterns are still bringing in a few, but no big numbers. Best action was observed by the Ohio Line in 65'-70' of water. Perch:
I think we've said it all. Fish are holding in 50' of water due north of Walnut Creek and north of the Presque Isle light house. Action has also been good just over the Ohio line (80.31.10 on the Loran) in 62' of water. Fish Fry:
The annual Walnut Creek fish fry was a great success this past week end. Our sincere thanks to all that contributed to a mouthwatering afternoon of deep fried Lake Erie Perch, Walleye, and Salmon and a wide selection of side dishes & desserts. Those two cooks really knew how to fry fish! The only mishap occurred when WCAA Staff member "Sherry" sipped a Yellow Jacket with her Coke. This 11.75# , 32 Inch long Steelhead (PHOTO PROVIDED) was caught by 14 year old Troy Loughner of Greensburg Pa. on Labor Day. Troy was using a Night Crawler when he hooked this fish. A twenty minute fight ensued before Troy was able to land him. Talk about a great ending to a perfect weekend spent in Erie. Troy an avid fisherman for most of his young life was tickled to be able to show off "The Big One" to all the old timers in our small community. As one old timer said, "This is one fish story I do believe." The young Angler has earned the respect of many of his older peers for this surprise catch. As officers, it gives us the greatest joy to see a youngster land a trophy like this. It not only reminds us why we took the job initially but makes us work harder to assure that this size fish doesn't fall prey to a slob poacher. I'm sure that the true sportsmen on our tribs feel the same way. Together we can make a difference to give other kids like Troy the opportunity. Fair Warning...
A quick review of last Steelhead Season revealed that the following violations were the most common (listed in descending order of frequency)
... traffic violations at Walnut Access (danger to pedestrians crossing at intersection)
... boating equipment (cold water heightens the need for proper safety equipment)
... netting fish (can lead to revocation of fishing privileges)
... snagging
... no license
... over the limit
... littering
... misuse of private property
... Special regs (closed stream areas & 50 yards from Trout Run after 10 PM)
... fishing in Nursery Waters
Be smart and avoid these mistakes, the penalties are harsh and many have revocation potential. There will also be increased enforcement concerning the use of foul language along the stream. Fishing is a family sport and there is no place for vulgarity nor is there any excuse for it. This type of behavior falls under the violation of "Disorderly Conduct" and carries penalties up to $300. CENTRAL ERIE COUNTY / WCO TOM EDWARDS Niagara's Homecoming Friday, September 13th, 2002
After voyaging the Great Lakes for most of the summer, the Official Flagship of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, US Brig Niagara, will return to her homeport on September 13th. Frank Gorham, official Town Crier of Amherstburg, Ontario, homeport of the HMS Detroit, and Michael Lieber, Town Crier for the town of Sylvania, Ohio, will come to Erie and will announce the time of Niagara’s return. The Town Criers will be stationed at 9th and State streets and in front of City Hall at noon and again at 3pm. The gates to the Niagara Plaza will open free to the public at 4pm and Niagara is expected to arrive between 5 and 6pm, escorted by the Historic Fireboat, Edward M Cotter. Cotter is expected to arrive late in the evening of September 12th. The Erepa Grotto Pipes and Drums will perform beginning at 4:30pm and as Niagara is docked will pipe the officers and crew off board.
At 8pm, the Perry Summer Concert Series will continue with a local favorite, Tanglefoot, and continue on September 14th with the performance of Clandestine. Both concerts are free and open to the public. The public is encouraged to bring a chair, blanket, and your favorite beverage. Food will be sold by St. John the Evangelist PTO.
Because of Niagara’s recent return, she will not be available for public boarding on September 13; she will open for general boarding on September 14 beginning at 9am. Niagara will remain in port until September 16th, at which time she will conduct crew-training sails and will be closed to the public through the 18th. Niagara’s fall schedule will be released within the next few weeks

Perch: 55' of water 2-3 miles west of the marina. Minnows or nightcrawlers. Walleye: 85' of water due north of the marina. 65' down. Steelhead: 85' - 110' of water due north of the marina along the edge of the mountain. 75' - 90' down. Lake trout: 130'-135' of water 85' - 110' down. Bass: 25'-40' of water, suspended. ( WCO's Mark & Joe were experiencing computer problems & unable to submit a report this week)
