WEST ERIE COUNTY, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions:
Erie has been without rain for the last 10 days since the remains of the dying hurricanes passed through. As such, most all areas on the tribs are low and clear although levels are fishable. The Walnut Project waters and the Manchester Hole are now holding fair to good numbers of fish in each of the holes and anglers have been doing very well along the North Walnut Creek wall at daybreak. Trout Run along the lakeshore has been very productive on calm days at daybreak. Fish are up to Route 20 but numbers are limited and fish are still scattered in those areas. Elk Creek has been giving up good numbers of fish from the mouth to the boat launch and on south to the waterfall hole. Very light presentations are a necessity with many experience anglers opting to use 2 lb. line or tippets. Minnows, small pieces of skein, and egg sacks have been hot along the wall at Walnut. Small suckerspawn patterns in white, peach, and pink along with woolly buggers and small nymphs have been good artificial choices in the shallow pools. Tipped micro jigs in brown, olive and black as well as single cured eggs (the natural kind) have been good choices as well.

Perch and walleye fishing isn't over yet as long as the lake conditions cooperate. Perch are stilled schooled north of Walnut creek in 66 to 71 feet of water. Good walleye fishing can still be found on the South side of the first trench and as of late has been some of the best of the season

Lake Erie water temperature as of this writing is 68 degrees as of this writing. West County tribs are low and clear as of this writing. rgl

Pull Those Lines in Along the Wall at Walnut Creek:
A number of anglers have been recently cited for allowing their lines to become tangled in the outdrives and props of passing boats through the Walnut Creek Channel. Again, boat traffic entering and exiting the channel has the right of way over any angler lines in the water. Fishing line tangled in a prop can damage the outdrive seal and create leakage and possibly expensive damage. If you are going to fish the North Wall at Walnut Creek be aware of boat traffic especially on calm days. Very often, shallow channel conditions force boaters to "hug the wall" where the water is typically deeper. Anglers often interpret this as the boaters infringing on their area when in fact channel conditions are dictating the path of the boats. Most problems seem to occur at daybreak and under low visibility conditions. Boaters are advised to blow their horns or sound producing device to alert the often larger crowds of anglers that a boat is coming through. rgl

Law Enforcement:
As is typical, litter seems to be a never ending problem and area officers have and will be on the watch for litter problems and will be assessing maximum penalties. A good number of litter violations have been already been discovered this season. Other violations over the past week included possession of foul hooked or snagged fish, failing to conform with posted traffic signals on PFBC controlled property (in particular the stop signs at the entrance to the Walnut Creek Access area.), littering, a number of boating equipment violations, and boat operators underway with children under 12 not wearing their PFDs. Every year we give an early season warning about making a full and complete stop at the entrance to the Walnut Creek Access. We have had a few accidents at this intersection over the years and a number of near misses as a result of people not stopping at this very busy intersection. With the amount of traffic in this area as well as the large amount of foot traffic these highly visible stop signs will be strictly enforced. rgl

Walnut Creek Access Area:
Line and arrow painted in the parking lot is underway to help congested traffic flow on the weekends. A private concession stand is now on site on the weekends for sandwiches and a hot cup of coffee or softdrink. rgl
