WEST ERIE COUNTY, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions:

The West County tribs have been a mix of open water and ice. Many of the slower moving pools are frozen or have a channel of water open. Fishing in these areas has been sporadic although there has been some success. A half a dozen or so anglers had a calm shore at Trout Run to themselves this past weekend with a number of catches observed. Live shiners or salted minnows have been the most popular bait lately

Bitter temperatures over the Holidays have brought ice over to Presque Isle and Misery Bays with varied thickness. Anglers have had some success the past few day with gills and a few perch off the South side of Presque Isle and in Misery Bay. Live shiners are the most consistent ice fishing bait. Reports of 3 to 5 inches of ice indicate that there is still instability and anglers venturing out on the hard water are advised to use extreme caution. Weather forecasts indicate a warming trend through the weekend in the 40's and possibly 50 degrees which could make the already thin ice dangerous and unfishable. If unsure, don't venture out on the ice.

Current Lake Erie Water temperature as of this writing is 37 degrees with Presque Isle Bay iced over. The Tribs are partially ice covered as of this writing although an imminent warming trend should cause significant melting over the next week.

Officers are asked to comment on local ice conditions & thickness. We must refrain from doing so due to the liability involved and the quick changes that can occur. A report issued today for safe ice in Presque Isle Bay may be totally inaccurate if a freighter is moved into the shipyard. Other agencies follow the similar procedures. We will provide recommended thickness and general guidelines but the actual ice conditions will be left to the individual anglers to decide on the day they are fishing. Minimum thickness for a single angler or a small group of spread out anglers is a good 4" thick. Drilling small pilot holes as you walk out can be done to check ice thickness but the decision us ultimately yours.

Another Year Closes:
Another year comes to a close and so ends another year of weekly reports. As always we are appreciative of the many emails of thanks and we welcome any questions, comments, and criticism that may help improve this forum. It is our intent to continue to bring you current information, updates, and useful tips to help both the novice and the expert have a better fishing experience and keep updated to what's happening in our area. It has been an interesting and sometimes contraversal year for the Commission and Anglers alike. The long jouney powered by overwhelming public support for a much needed license increase will go a long way protecting and enhancing the great angling opportunities that Pennsylvania has to offer. The rallying support over the past year is a testament to the strength and commitment of our Pennsylvania Sportsmen. Angler support and assistance this past year to law enforcement, especially in the Erie has been overwhelming and invaluable and you have our sincere thanks. On behalf of Officers Brook Tolbert, Tom Edwards, Mark Kerr, and their team of Deputies along with the Northwest Region office staff, Best wishes for a happy, prosperous, and satisfying New Year. DWCO Randy Leighton
