WEST ERIE COUNTY, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions:

Perch fishing continues to be fair to good although the schools seem to be on the move not having settled in any particular areas.. 45 to 50 feet of water Northwest of Walnut Creek is the currently the hot area. Good Perch action typically will last all summer and well into the fall months. Shiners are plentiful although many anglers will use fathead minnows. The fat heads will not trigger as many strikes however, they are much easier to keep alive in the bait bucket.

Bass fishing continues to be good. Presque Isle Bay has been good in any area where there is cover. Hot spots include Horseshoe pond around the Perry Monument, the North and South Piers, and the East and West Piers along the channel entering Mariana Lake. Tube baits and other soft plastics, jerk baits, and live shiners, leeches, and crawlers have all been working well. One of the best baits for bass are live crayfish available at some bait shops. The current limit for bass on Lake Erie and Presque Isle Bay is 4 fish with a minimum size limit of 15"

Walleye action seems to have picked up somewhat. Boaters have been picking up eyes in shallower water, 25 to 45 feet and in 60 to 65 feet North of the Point and West to Walnut Creek. Michigan Stinger spoons and crawler harnesses are still the ticket. Local charters have also indicated the Reef runners in gold and copper have been triggering good strikes as well as.

The Stateline ponds along Interstate 90 at the Ohio line have had very little fishing pressure lately. This can be a good place to try your luck for crappie, perch, and sunfish. The ponds also hold a fair number of bass. The Stateline ponds are relatively shallow and are a good place to use a canoe or small car top boats. There are no launch ramps and most of the area is primitive.

Current Lake Erie off shore water temperature as of this writing is 68 degrees

Divers in the Water:
Diving season is underway in our area. The numerous wrecks off the Erie Shoreline and clear water conditions have made diving a popular past time with divers marking Erie as a premier diving spot. Make yourself aware of the flags signifying a diver in the water and steer clear of these boats. A diver down flag is displayed from a float during diving operations. This flag is red with a white diagonal stripe running from the top of the staff to the opposite lower corner. The code flag alpha is a blue and white pennant and boats must display this flag during dive operations if they are restricted in their ability to maneuver. Boats not engaged in diving operations shall remain at least 100 feet from areas displaying the diver down flag, or boats displaying the code flag alpha.

Boating Safety Tip of the Week:
Always anchor your boat from the bow. Adding the pull of an anchor to the stern can let water wash over the transom, swamping the boat.

Erie Arts Festival:
Boaters and anglers enjoying our area this week are invited to stop by the 7th annual Erie Area Summer Festival of the Arts. The Festival takes place June 23rd through the 26th. Activities are centered in and around the Bayfront Pepsi Amphitheater at Liberty Park on the South side of Presque Isle Bay. This year's Festival features demonstrating artists and crafters, a song contest, award-winning children's area, ethnic foods, film contest, juried panorama art show, computer instruction-programs for children and adults as well as strolling musicians.
