WEST ERIE COUNTY, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions:

The Erie area was pounded this past weekend with severe thunderstorms and rain. The area along the lakeshore in Fairview and in and around the Walnut Creek access area were among the hardest hit with many large downed trees and power lines. Winds in excess of 60 mph along with excessive lightening left thousands of area residents without power. A second significant storm Tuesday afternoon had boats scrambling for safe harbor. Although not taken lightly, Erie residents are pretty resilient to all types of heavy weather that mother nature can dish out and by mid week much of the damage clearing was well underway. How does this affect the are fishing? Typically not a great deal. Occasionally, following a significant weather event, fishing will slow for a short time however, once the lake calmed, we had only a short slow down.. Area perch fishing has improved significantly over the past week with a number of anglers limiting out Monday in 42 feet of water due North of Walnut Creek. Walleye fishing has been fair to good over the last week with anglers concentrating on the South side of the first trench and in the deeper waters of the second trench Northwest of Walnut Creek.

Storms around the area over the past week were a good example of how rapidly wind and wave conditions can change with a fast moving storm from our West.

Current average Lake Erie tater temperature off Cleveland is 76 degrees and off Erie is 77 degrees.

The PA. Steelhead Association will be kicking off the season with its first meeting of the season on Wednesday evening, August 10th at 7:00. The scheduled speaker for the evening will be Chuck Murray, area biologist with the PFBC. Chuck's presentations on our fishery are highly informative and are always well attended.

Also on the agenda will be details regarding the club's annual Big Run Banquet. The annual event features a pig roast with all the fixings along with beer and soft drinks. Raffles, games and door prizes are nearly endless. Fly tying, casting, and sac tying demonstrations round out a day of fun for all and benefit a hard working club dedicated to our steelhead fishery.
