WEST ERIE COUNTY, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Area tribs as well as Presque Isle Bay and the Lake are ice free with fast flowing water from weekend rainfall and melting of the remaining snow. Although we are back into winter temperatures again, forecasts indicate that temperatures above freezing throughout the remainder of the week may fend off the ice. A significant number of fresh steelhead in the 15' to 20" range, or "jacks" as they are often called, have moved into the lower stretches of Elk and Walnut Creeks. Fresh steelhead in this size range put up a great fight on the end of a noodle or fly rod and can be better table fare than the larger older steelhead. These fresh fish are generally aggressive and will hit a variety of presentations depending on water clarity. Small presentations will work, especially single cured eggs and egg patter flies along with the micro jigs and live grubs. Suckers have begun to move into the tribs which is a good indicator that spring may actually be around the corner. A few boats were spotted this past weekend on Presque Isle bay targeting post ice crappie and pan fish. Great Lakes Fishery Commission Meeting: The Annual Lake Erie Committee meeting that will be part of the Great Lake Fisheries Commission Meeting will be held in Windsor, Canada on March 20th and 21st at the Hilton Windsor, 277 Riverside Drive West in Windsor, Ontario. The Great Lakes Fisheries Act of 1956 authorized the appointment of advisors to the U.S. Section of the Commission "to examine and be heard on all proposed recommendations, programs, and activities relating to [the lake they represent]." The U.S. Section appoints advisors from each lake from a list provided by the Great Lakes state governors. Due consideration is given to interests of state agencies, the commercial fish industry, sport fishermen, and the public-at-large. Pennsylvania has 4 individuals from our area representing these sectors including the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. The Great Lakes Fishery Commission was established by the Convention on Great Lakes Fisheries between Canada and the United States in 1955.
