June 6th, 2006

West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions:

The perch have started to school and a good number limits are now being reported by the charter boats as well as the individual anglers. Recent hot spots have been in 60 feet of water off the point at Presque Isle and in 40 feet of water near the "cribs" east of Presque Isle Bay. Walleye action is slowly picking up but still a bit spotty. Anglers have been catching bass both small and largemouth bass throughout Presque Isle bay. The West end of the bay has been hot for largemouths although nothing of significant size. The smallmouth catches are a different story with many fish reported in the 5 to 6 lb range. Northern Pike have been hitting in the west end of the bay off the Erie Yacht club.
Lake Erie water temperature off Toledo is 67 degrees, off Cleveland 59 degrees, and off Erie 57 degrees.

Another Basic Boating Class Added for the Erie Area:
Boating classes have been extremely popular this year with most having filled to capacity. The PFBC will be adding another class on July 12th and 13th from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM. This class will be held at Gander Mountain behind the Millcreek Mall in Erie. To reserve a spot in this class phone (814) 868-0880. This comprehensive 8 hour class is designed for the novice boater or boater to be, as well as the experienced boater who would like to refresh his knowledge. Successful completion of the course qualifies the individual for a Pennsylvania boating education safety certificate (card). There is no charge for the course or materials, although registration is required. These classes typically fill up quickly and early sign up is recommended. Upon successful completion of the course and the final exam , the Agency will require a processing fee for your Basic Boating Safety Card if one is desired.

Boating Safety Tip of the Week, Especially Applicable to Lake Erie Boaters:
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) encourages the maritime public to report information concerning suspicious activity to their local Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) office, https://tips.fbi.gov, or to other appropriate authorities. Individuals can contact the DHS Watch and Warning Unit at:

202-323-3205, or toll free, 888-585-9078 E-mail, nipc.watch@fbi.gov.
The U.S. Coast Guard reminds the maritime industry that they may also report information concerning suspicious activity to the National Response Center (NRC) at 800-424-8802.

Protect Yourself From the Sun:
Waterways Conservation Officers are all too aware of the dangers of overexposure to the sun and make sunscreen and other protective measures a part of there daily patrol routine. Even Erie has enough sun to do considerable skin damage to the unsuspecting. Consider the following when outdoors this boating season:
The sun causes 80% of premature skin aging, making sun protection one of the best defenses against wrinkles. Those with fair skin and young children should can be especially sensitive.

Sunscreen use is beneficial even on cloudy days, since 80% of the sun’s rays can penetrate light clouds, mist and fog.

SPF 30 and 45 products block more than 96% of the sun’s UV rays.

Water activities increase the exposure of the sun by reflecting 85-90% of the UV rays.

The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) number tells you how many times longer you can stay in the sun before burning than if you hadn’t used any sunscreen at all. SPF 30 and 45 products block more than 96% of the sun’s UV rays.

Apply sunscreen even when you’re under an umbrella or a boat canopy. The rays will reflect off the water and reach you. That goes for concrete, snow, and other reflective surfaces, too.
