West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions: Weekend fishing was good with a mix of fresh and blackened fish throughout the tribs. Fishing was excellent at the Elk Creek access this past week end with very little angling pressure. I was able to get early and had most of Elk Creek from the boat launch north to myself. Temperatures at dawn kept the water just at the freezing point but not cold enough to make ice an issue. Single eggs and sucker spawn patterns kept me busy for a number of hours. Precipitation levels and run off have worked their magic creating that wonderful dark green winter color in the deeper pools that will provide a striking contrast to the inevitable snow cover. Winter is a terrific time to fish the tribs if you prepare for the cold weather and the ice water.

There are still large numbers of fish holding in the nursery waters at Trout Run. Most of the fish are blackened and weak however, close observation revealed a surprising number of fresh fish mixed in the pack. Fishing the shoreline at Trout Run has been unusually good with many days still seeing little or no wave action. Shoreline fishing should remain good until the we get into freezing temperatures and heavy winter wave conditions.

Walnut Creek is still holding fish in the Project waters and anglers are still doing fair to good along the wall leading to the Lake. The Manchester Hole is still loaded with fish and will continue to draw a good number of anglers until ice over.

The upper stretches continue to hold good numbers of fish with a fair number of fresh fish moving upstream.

Lake Erie water temperature as of this writing is 39 degrees. West County trib conditions as of Tuesday afternoon were at average levels with some color and good flow.

Burbot:
Anglers are beginning to target Burbot along the North Pier. Most Burbot are accidentally hooked by unsuspecting Perch anglers using minnows and perch rigs however, more and more anglers are going after them. Anglers specifically targeting Burbot will typically use the largest shiners they can get, often using two on one hook and fish them on the bottom. Large jigging spoons worked on the bottom can be worth a try as well. Burbot are a fresh water cod that enjoy the coldest depths of Great Lakes. As water temperatures drop, Burbot will move into shallower water and can often be caught from the North and South piers. Burbot has a mild taste and can be enjoyed fried, baked, or broiled
