January 1st, 2008 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: The West County tribs were on the clear side with reasonable flow as of Tuesday afternoon. A number of anglers were spotted chasing that first catch of the new year. A winter storm warning has been in effect through Wednesday for the area. The snow accumulation should bring some color and depth the the tribs. Overnight temperatures are predicted in the teens for the next few days which will likely bring morning slush and some ice. Fish are scattered throughout the tribs with pockets of fish holding in the slower moving, deeper pools. Jigs, skein, egg sacks, and minnows are all popular baits for the cold water fishing. Fly anglers find the egg patterns, small jigs, and wooly buggers are often the "go to" presentations. Lake Erie water temperature off the Port of Erie is 33 degrees. Don't Forget: 2008 Fishing licenses are to be displayed on an outer garment when fishing effective 12:01 AM, January 1st, 2008. There is no grace period. Elk Creek Access Area: The Girard Township Supervisors will be holding a public meeting at the Girard High School on January 15th at 7:00 PM. The purpose of the meeting is to gather public comment regarding the development potential and future of the Elk Creek Access area. This is a great opportunity to get involved with the future of this area. Congratulations to WCO Ed Stuart: Waterways Conservation Officer Ed Stuart was recently named the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators' 2007 Officer of the Year. Ed is assigned to Central Erie County. Ed began his career with the Commission in 2004 and was assigned to the the Central Erie County district in October 2005. WCO Stuart is heavily involved in boating activities on Presque Isle Bay and on the open waters of Lake Erie. In only a few short years, Stuart has become a well recognized figure in the Erie fishing and boating community both as an outstanding officer and as a skillful public relations liaison for the Commission. His professional, no nonsense approach to law enforcement combined with his exemplary communications skills have earned him high respect among his peers and the public. Well done Ed. Cold Weather Angling in Erie: Area temperatures have reached the point where iced up lines and cold feet are the norm. Almost all cold weather anglers have a remedy for iced up lines from the commercial sprays to Vaseline and lip balms. Generally any convenient substance that will repel water will work. I like to carry a small tube of lip balm and apply it at the first sign of ice on the line or the rod eyes. If you are using a float, it can be thinly applied to keep the float ice free. Casting a heavily iced up line, particularly fly line in most cases will do little more than spook the fish. Another tip is to avoid getting the inner workings of your reel wet. Once the inside of the reel takes on water it can freeze rendering the drag useless and possibly damaging the reel.
