December 17th, 2008

West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert

Conditions:

Heavy rains Monday sent the Erie tribs into blow out mode with with conditions high and muddy. By Tuesday, levels subsided some and although still high, the tribs were fishable. The remainder of the week looks good if we don’t start to ice up. Anglers have been having fair to moderate success after the blowout with the steelhead able to move at will. Fish are still stacked heavily at Trout Run. This is usually a good indication that fish are still moving in from the lake, conditions permitting.

Law Enforcement:
Officers remain busy even through the colder parts of the season. There continues to be the occasional Nursery Water problems, snagging, taking foul hooked fish in possession, litter and an unusual case on the lake at Trout Run. Two individuals were in kayaks with out life jackets. Not only a violation, but with the frigid water, not a very wise decision.

Walnut Creek Access Office:
Friday, December 19th will be the last day the WCAA office and restroom facilities will be open for the season. (Portable facilities will remain throughout the winter) The office has all of the popular PFBC publications, books and posters as well as 2009 licenses, all of which make great last minute stocking stuffers. Beverly, Judy, and Sherry (the office team at Walnut) give their best wishes for a great holiday and thank everyone for a wonderful season.

Winter Safety:
Winter conditions along the tribs can offer some great steelhead fishing however, frigid conditions present a number of safety challenges to those hardy anglers. Winter time is good time to buddy up and avoid fishing alone, especially in the more remote areas. An unexpected slip or a soaking in frigid water is a good reason to have potential help nearby. Even though cell phone coverage improves daily, many of the areas in Western Erie County, especially along the lake shore offer minimal to no reception. Layering in warm clothing and covering the head and ears should be standard dress. Neoprene waders can provide good insulation as well. Frequent breaks and occasional walking while fishing will help keep the circulation moving and the body warm. Standing in ice water until the legs are numb can make an spill a reality. Frequent snacks and warm drinks can help to replenish the energy robbed by the cold temperatures. A little extra care and preparation during the winter months will go a long way in keeping your angling experience safe and enjoyable.
