Conditions: Area temperatures have remained well below freezing again putting many areas back into freeze over. There is still open water in many areas of the tribs. Temperatures are predicted to climb into the upper 40s perhaps bringing another quick melt down. Presque Isle Bay has been firming up, however there is still open water and the pending warming up could make for hazardous conditions
Posted Access Advisory: Access to Elk Creek in in Mckean off of Old West Road is now a posted area. This area is one mile east of 832 on the left off of West road. The road is a short and un marked with a dead end. The landowner access to the trib from this road is now posted (signage is in process). Access to this particular stretch of Elk is now by water only. Anglers should have no reason to park in this area without access to Elk Creek. This posted area will be enforced.
Fish & Boat Commission Schedules Public Meeting, Public Opportunity to Meet Commissioners and Staff: Meadville, PA - The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will host a public meeting on March 24, 2009, at the Vernon Central Fire Department Social Hall in Meadville, to give an update about the agency’s work and to discuss a new license proposal the agency will offer to legislators this spring.
The meeting will begin with an informal open house from 6pm-7pm when the public can meet the Executive Director, Dr. Doug Austen, region Commissioner Sam Concilla, and Commission staff. Also during this time, a display and information area staffed by PFBC partner organizations will be open. From 7pm-8pm, Dr. Austen and regional staff will make various presentations, including fisheries updates, habitat projects, outreach and education activities, and boating and access programs. A general discussion including question and answer period will follow from 8pm-9pm.
“The meeting will allow us to meet our customers, the anglers and boaters who use our services and the resources every day,” said Doug Austen, PFBC executive director. “It’s important that we hear from them.”
“There are a lot of projects we do that I believe the public isn’t aware of. We want to tell them about how these projects enhance fishing and boating opportunities and how they protect and conserve our aquatic resources.” Austen said.
Directions: 4/10 of a mile South of the intersection of routes and 19. Take exit 147B off of I-79 (State Route 322 West) to the 2nd light. Turn left on to State Route 19 South and go 4/10 of a mile and turn right on to McMath (look for Vernon Twp. Municipal Building sign on right). Go 2/10 of a mile to the parking lot on the left. Enter "Social Hall" doors. PFBC Basic Boating Class, Still Openings to Sign UP: Area officers from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, will be conducting a safe boating class on Saturday March 21st from 8:30 AM until 5:00 PM. The class will be held in Room 110 at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center located at 301 Peninsula Drive, Erie, PA. Class size will be limited to 30 participants. This comprehensive class is designed for the novice boater or boater to be, as well as the experienced boater who would like to refresh his knowledge and is especially recommended for the new boater and their families. The class covers basic boating safety, boating laws and regulations, and equipment. Successful completion of the course qualifies the individual for a Pennsylvania Boating Safety Certificate (card). There is no charge for the course or materials, although registration is required. The 25th annual Erie Outdoor Sport and Travel Expo will be held March 6th through March 8th at the Erie Bayfront Convention Center along the Erie bay front just west of Dobbins landing. Hours are Noon to 8:00 PM on Friday, 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Saturday and 10:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday. With 24 years under its belt, this expo has developed into the definitive cabin fever event for area hunters and anglers. The expo is a fabulous mix of the latest in hunting and fishing information and gear blended with exhibits by local clubs, bait shops and sport and travel stores and outfitters from around the globe. Use heavily waxed paper wrap, heavy duty aluminum foil, or plastic freezer storage bags for fish storage. . Wrap fish tightly. Remove all air from the bag before sealing . Fish can be placed in a shallow metal, covered with water, frozen, and re-wrapped in foil, paper or plastic . Label packages with contents and dates . Space packages in freezer to allow proper air circulation for quick cooling and freezing . Once packages are solidly frozen (with in 24 hours), you can restack them within the freezer . Properly wrapped fish will store in the freezer for six months if they are fat fish . To avoid quality deterioration, do not refreeze thawed products . In general, for smoking, salt the fish (1 cup salt to 7 cups of water along with herbs and spices of choice) for 1 hour. . Smoked fish can be stored in the refrigerator.
