April 7th, 2009 West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, WCO Brook Tolbert Conditions: Winter conditions rolled back in to Erie with some spring time snow and cold temperatures. The additional precipitation has helped keep the tribs flowing and stained. There are fresh steelhead mixed in with the winter weather worn fish and the suckers have spread heavily through most of the area. Steelhead are scattered but remain throughout the tribs. A fair number of the smaller "jack" sized steelhead have moved in to the access area on Elk Creek up to and around the first bend by the boat launch. Presque Isle Bay has been popular with a good number of steelhead given up along with fair to good catches of spring time crappie . Current Lake Erie water temperature off Toledo is 44 degrees, off Cleveland, 40 degrees and of the Port of Erie, 43 degrees. Support Your Local Sportsmen's Clubs: The Pennsylvania Steelhead Association will be holding their monthly meeting on Wednesday April 8th at the American Legion Post on West 12th street (route 5 near the Airport) at 7:00 PM. The public is welcome. Trophy Bass Season on Lake Erie: Trophy bass season on Lake Erie, it's tributaries, and Presque Isle bay begins April 18th and extends through June 20th. Minimum size during this period is 20" with a one fish daily creel limit. Along with this is unlawful to conduct or participate in a fishing tournament for bass on Lake Erie or Presque Isle Bay during the period from opening day of the trout season in April until midnight the first Saturday after June 11. License Display Reminder: Due to the advent of warmer weather, coupled with varying degrees of cabin-fever as well as fresh runs, our officers' are once again encountering larger numbers of eager anglers along the tribs. Please keep in mind this friendly reminder... fishing licenses are required to be displayed at ALL times. For your convenience as well as ours, it is suggested that upon purchasing a license that a plastic license holder is purchased too; followed by attaching that holder to either a hat or other outside garment. Boating: A number of boats have been observed on both the Bay and the Lake. Ice meltdown on Lake Erie along with the raging tribs bring a considerable amount of debris to Lake Erie. Boater should keep an especially sharp lookout when underway. Water temperatures are still frigid. Use extreme caution when boating this time of year. Make sure all required safety equipment is on board and keep PFD's with in reach or better yet, wear them. Hypothermia can set in quickly with the current Lake temperatures.
