West Erie County, DWCO Randy Leighton, rglerie@msn.com

Conditions:
Varied reports have come in over the last week which would be consistent with the variety of wind and wave conditions we have been experiencing. Generally, lake fishing has been good to excellent for both perch and walleye. Locating the moving walleye can be tricky at times and often necessitates a change of tactics, presentations and location. Anglers are reporting good catches both shallow and deep in the trenches with the smaller fish generally closer to shore and the lunker walleye in 65 to 70' of water in and along the trenches north west of Walnut Creek. Perch fishing has been good in 48 to 52 feet of water northeast of Walnut Creek and off the point. Generally, once the walleye and perch are located, the bite is very good. With Lake temperatures much warmer this year, moving to deeper cooler water may be helpful. Current Lake temperatures as of this writing are 76 degrees off Toledo, 71 degrees off Cleveland and 77 degrees off the Port of Erie.

Discarded Fishing Line Can Kill:
Quality fishing line is the most important link in your tackle for catching lunker bass, big walleye and line busting steelhead but loose line on the ground and in the water is a life threatening hazard to birds and wildlife. Loose line tangle in a boats propeller can quickly destroy an out drive seal causing leakage an possibly hundreds of dollars worth of damage. The vast majority of fishing line is monofilament. In addition to being strong, it is long lasting, and reportedly can last for many years. Since it is usually clear or light colored, it is difficult for birds, aquatic animals and wildlife to see so they can easily become entangled. Once entangled, an animal very often will strangle, drown, or starve to death.

When you throw away used line, it is best to cut it in pieces less than 12 inches long when possible. This is easier than it sounds and really not a lot of trouble. Just take the knotted ball of line and cut it up as much as possible. Make yourself an easy container to use for collecting your used line by cutting an X in the lid of a potato chip tube or tennis ball canister. Be aware of the age of your line and wear that might allow it to break while fishing. Remove leader, hooks, and any other terminal tackle before recycling or disposal. Whenever possible, recover line you find while out on the water. If you miscast, try to recover all of the line that becomes entangled in weeds or trees. Try not to "just cut it" unless absolutely necessary.

Boating Under the Influence, You Can't Afford It: With hot weather settling in on the Erie area and boating season in full swing, alcohol and boating often are synonymous when in fact they can, and often are, a deadly combination.

The penalties for operation of a watercraft while under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance could lead to a fine of not less than $500 nor more than $7,500, or imprisonment not exceeding two years, or both, plus the loss of boating privileges for a period of 12 months. Homicide by watercraft while under the influence carries a fine of not less than $2,500 nor exceeding $15,000, or imprisonment of no less than three and no more than seven years, or both. In addition to the offenses described above, operating a watercraft under the influence may also violate other laws. These may include prohibitions against reckless or negligent operation of boats, public drunkenness, disorderly conduct and under-age drinking.

Safe boating operation requires a clear head, steady hand and observant eye. Alcohol diminishes these necessary ingredients for a safe and pleasurable day on the water. If you think enough of friends and loved ones' lives to stop them from driving a car after having too much to drink, why not do the same when you're on the water? Impaired skippers not only endanger their lives and their passengers' lives, but they can also ruin the lives of other boaters.

Boating Safety Tip of the Week:
Carbon monoxide gas is a potentially deadly byproduct of your boats engine. Each year boaters are killed or injured by carbon monoxide. Stay away from exhaust areas and do not swim near exhaust vents. Never enter an enclosed area under a swim platform where exhaust is vented. Only one or two breaths of the air in this death chamber can be fatal.
