Walleye success has been noticeably on the rise with anglers really getting into them this past week. Tandem crawler harnesses in Chartreuse, Purple, Watermelon, and Copper have been hot along with the Stinger style spoons and stick baits in a variety of colors. Many limits have been brought in from a variety of depths. 60 to 65 feet of water north and northwest of Walnut Creek and along the first trench all the way north to the second trench in 75 to 90 feet of water. Anglers were observed with good catches with in site of the Canadian line. Perch fishing seems to have picked up as well with many limits reported in only a few hours. The largest perch pack is bunched up north of the point off Presque Isle in 60 to 65 feet of water. As is typical, the majority of the fish being pulled from the lake are hitting in the morning hours and just before sunset. Bass and panfish are hitting well in Presque Isle Bay in the early morning and late afternoon hours.
Current Lake Erie Water temperature off Toledo is 76 degrees, off Cleveland, 76 degrees, and off the Port of Erie, 77 degrees. This year the event will take over State street from 4th street to 12th street. The gala fireworks display over Presque Isle Bay takes place Sunday Night at 9:30 PM. The view of hundreds of boats dotting the Bay combined with the largest fireworks display in the area is breath taking. A marked safety perimeter around Dobbins Landing will be maintained by area law enforcement during the fireworks display. Boater cooperation will be appreciated. The Pennsylvania Steelhead Association will hold its first meeting of the season (a sure sign that Fall is just around the corner) tonight, Wednesday August 11th at the American Legion on West 12th street (route 5 just east of the Tom Ridge Field) at 7:00 PM.
Steelhead?
No, they are not here yet, however it's not to early to spend a rainy day checking your gear. Cleaning and lubricating those reels and re-spooling with fresh line will go a long way when the first opportunity arrives. An update of your fly box and jig collection can keep you busy as well. Now is a good time to check over the fly and noodle rods. Look for loose or bent eyes, especially at the rod tip. Be sure all hooks are sharp. Dull hooks are easily spit by a lively Steelhead. Waders should be checked for leaks and repaired, particular those that have been hanging in a hot garage or sitting in a trunk all summer. It won't be but a few weeks before the dog days of summer will be giving way to cooler temperatures and the start of Steelhead season. A few stray very optimistic anglers have already been spotted on the wall at the Walnut Creek Access Area. The tribs are little more than a trickle at this time but with a little luck and a lot of rain it wont be long. Stray steelhead are being picked up frequently by walleye anglers in deep water. Carbon monoxide gas is a potentially deadly byproduct of your boat's engine. Each year boaters are killed or injured by carbon monoxide. Stay away from exhaust areas and do not swim near exhaust vents. Never enter an enclosed area under a swim platform where exhaust is vented. Only one or two breaths of the air in this "death chamber" can be fatal.
